For Trainers

All Trainers on the UW Cardiovascular Research Center Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science will be encouraged to attend:

  • Annual Introductory Meeting of Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science
  • Semester Meeting of Trainee Presentations
  • UW Cardiovascular Research Center Journal Clubs (especially in research area)
  • UW Cardiovascular Research Center Scientific Poster Fair
  • Monthly Cardiovascular Research Conference

For Trainers with Current Trainees

All Trainers with trainees on the UW Cardiovascular Research Center Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science will be required to attend:

  • Annual Introductory Meeting of Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science
  • Semester Meeting of Trainee Presentations (at least one)
  • Host one UW Cardiovascular Research Center Journal Club

In addition, Trainers will be required to mentor and guide trainees, and ensure that trainees fulfill the requirements of the training program.

All Trainees

  1. All Trainees on the UW Cardiovascular Research Center Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science will be required to attend:
     
    • Annual Introductory Meeting of Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science
    • Semester Meeting of Trainee Presentations
    • Host one UW Cardiovascular Research Center Journal Club
    • UW Cardiovascular Research Center Journal Club in research area
    • UW Cardiovascular Research Center Scientific Poster Fair (presentation encouraged)
       
  2. All Trainees on the UW Cardiovascular Research Center Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science will be encouraged to attend:
     
    • UW Cardiovascular Research Center Journal Clubs (in non research area)
    • Monthly Cardiovascular Research Conference
       
  3. All Trainees are required to complete or have completed a course on the Ethical Conduct of Research. Examples include:
     
    • History of Medicine 545 – Ethical and Regulatory Issues in Clinical Research, Semester I, 1 credit.
    • Nursing 802 – Conduct of Research in Nursing, Semester II, 1 credit
    • Oncology 675 – Appropriate Conduct of Science
       
  4. All Trainees involved in human subjects research are required to complete and report on:
     
    • UW Human Subjects Online Training
    • UW HIPAA Online Training
       
  5. All trainees must cite funding support on other grant applications and publications for work done while under the UW Cardiovascular Research Center Training Grant, "This investigation was supported by the National Institutes of Health, National Research Service Award (NRSA) T32 HL07936 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Cardiovascular Research Center."
     
  6. Timely annual progress reports will be expected of all trainees, and trainees will be required to report on career changes to the training program administrator for ten years after the end of the funding period.
     
  7. Trainees are encouraged to present research at national or international scientific meetings; travel funding is available through this training program.
     
  8. Trainees are encouraged to apply for individual fellowships at the end of the training period.
     
  9. NRSA requires a Statement of Appointment (Form PHS 2271) to be signed before this appointment is official.
     

All Predoctoral Trainees

  1. Students are expected to devote full time to graduate study and research and to make satisfactory progress toward a Ph.D. degree.
     
  2. Students with limited background in physiology are required to audit the portion of Principles of Human Physiology, Course 720, related to the cardiovascular system, in the Medical School Curriculum (second semester); students with a background in physiology should audit Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, Medical Sciences 706, a fall semester course.

All Postdoctoral Trainees

Postdoctoral trainees with limited background in cardiovascular pathophysiology should audit Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, Medical Sciences 706, a fall semester course.

All Postdoctoral Clinical (Post MD) Trainees

All postdoctoral clinical (post-MD) trainees on the Training Program in Translational Cardiovascular Science are required to take the following courses:

  • Short Course in Clinical Research - 3-day introductory conference in Summer, non-credit
  • Scientific Writing I – Manuscript Writing & Presentations, Semester I, 2-day workshop, non-credit
  • Scientific Writing II – Grant Writing, Semester II, 1-day workshops, non-credit

Core Required Courses

In addition, all postdoctoral clinical (post-MD) trainees must have completed or take a core set of courses in biostatistics and epidemiology. These may be taken for grade, pass/fail, or audit with some proof of attendance. Both courses in #1 are strongly recommended, however only 1 is required, unless an equivalent course was passed during graduate or undergraduate training. For trainees who took the courses in #1 prior to the traineeship, one course from #2 is required.

  1. Basic biostatistics and epidemiology
     
    • Statistics 541 – Introduction to Biostatistics, Semester I, 3 credits
      OR Statistics 641 - Statistical Methods for Clinical Trials, Semester 1, 3 credits
    • Epidemiology - Preventive Medicine 797 – Introduction to the Strategy & Methods of Epidemiology, Semester I, 2 credits
  2. Advanced clinical research
    For trainees who completed both requirements in #1 prior to the traineeship, chose one of the following:
     
    • Statistics/Biostatistics 542 – Introduction to Clinical Trials, Semester II, 3 credits
    • OR Statistics 642 Statistical Methods for Epidemiology, Semester II, 3 credits
    • AND Epidemiology - Any course in Population Health Sciences 700-800 series
    • Approved courses with similar content, including directed study
